Meta has introduced an "experimental" Travel Mode for its Quest 2 and Quest 3 headsets, making them more convenient to use while flying.

Previously, using the Quest headsets in a moving vehicle, like an airplane, was challenging due to their positional tracking system. The interface would become misaligned, making it difficult to use effectively. However, with the new Travel Mode, users can now enjoy a seamless experience even while in flight.

To enable Travel Mode on your Quest headset:

  1. Press the Meta button on your right controller to access the menu.
  2. Hover over the clock and select "Quick settings."
  3. Go to "Settings" in the top right corner.
  4. Select "Experimental" and toggle Travel Mode on.

Once enabled, you can easily switch Travel Mode on or off from the quick settings menu.

Travel Mode allows you to use your Quest headset as usual, including passthrough and positional tracking features. Meta describes the Quest as "the ultimate in-flight entertainment device," suitable for watching movies on a large virtual screen, playing games, using meditation apps, or even getting some work done privately. The feature remains functional even if you glance out of the window, unlike Apple's Vision Pro, which may encounter issues in similar scenarios.

Depending on the airline, your Quest headset might automatically recognize that you are on an airplane and suggest activating Travel Mode when you turn it on. Currently, Travel Mode is optimized specifically for airplane travel. Meta plans to extend support to other forms of transportation, such as cars and subways, in the future.
